The movie Wicked has hit the silver screen and people are raving with fantastic reviews. I like to watch the premise of movies if they are based on something and Wicked is based on a hit Broadway musical. I started watching the musical last week. There is a line in the musical where Elphaba says “I don’t cause commotion, I am commotion”.

She was saying it in an effort to downplay her power because she’d been told all her life that she was a problem and that the power she possessed was a nuisance. This statement she made is power packed! She unknowingly made a declaration that she has everything in her to shift an atmosphere.

This then made me think about the infamous Wizard of Oz and the shoes that were placed on Dorothy’s feet. She’d been given a gift but didn’t even know the power this gift possessed. The entire movie Dorothy was trying to get home not realizing the power to do so was in her hands or on her feet, rather. She kept looking elsewhere.

Dorothy had the power to go home the entire time, but she didn’t know how to use her gift. She didn’t even ask what the shoes were for! She just admired their glitz and glitter. She went down an unnecessary path to get home when she had the tools all along.

How often do we ask God to “do this”, “help us with that”, “show out on our behalf” and all along He’s given us the power to do so but we haven’t bothered to tap into the gifts He’s already bestowed on us?! We admire the gifts, we say thank you for the gifts, but how often do we USE the gifts? Ephesians 3:20 promises that God will do exceeding and abundantly according to the power that works IN us. We have to activate that power, that gift. In this season of preparation for the new year we must be mindful to be intentional about what we are doing with what God has given us.

We have a charge to create, support, and cultivate. How can we effectively do that if we don’t know what we’re using to do so?

We have a responsibility to use what God has given us in order to accomplish His will in the earth. We no longer have the luxury of hiding behind old wounds, feelings of inadequacy, or lack of opportunity.

There are a few steps we should do to help ensure we are doing our part and utilizing EVERYTHING God has given us. We want to leave this world empty from using everything He gave. We want to hear him say well done from using everything He gave us. We want to bring Him glory through using our gifts. We want to honor the sacrifice of the cross by using our gifts. We want to fully embrace resurrection power by using our gifts.

Here’s a few ways to know what's in you and how to prepare to use it:

  • Take Inventory of What's Been Given

    • Acknowledge that God has placed a wonderful gift in you. He’s hidden His treasures in US and expects us to use them. 2 Corinthians 4:7 “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us”

    • Seek God to find out what specific gifts He’s given you for your unique purpose. Ask Him what is YOUR treasure.

  • Evaluate the Inventory (gifts)

    • Take a moment of introspection and see if you have tainted your gift. Is there sin corrupting what you should be using for God? Are there hinderances in your personality that are causing inhibitions? Psalm 139:24 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

    • It is important for us to make sure that our gifts are being used and developed purely.

  • Use the inventory (gifts)

    • Once you have taken inventory and examined your heart it’s time to use your gifts.

    • Using your gifts not only places you in obedience but it also benefits the body of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-12 AMP And [His gifts to the church were varied and] He Himself appointed some as apostles [special messengers, representatives], some as prophets [who speak a new message from God to the people], some as evangelists [who spread the good news of salvation], and some as pastors and teachers [to shepherd and guide and instruct], 12 [and He did this] to fully equip and perfect the saints (God’s people) for works of service, to build up the body of Christ [the church];

Now, that you’ve gotten a few tips for your arsenal, be encouraged. Of course, we know that wrestle not against flesh and blood so you will be attacked when it comes to using what God has placed in you. However we are not ignorant of Satan's devices and can cover ourselves and our gifts in prayer and plead the blood against any attack known and unknown. KNOW that God has given you victory!

Be sober, be vigilant, and more importantly, be ye steadfast and unmovable always abounding in the work of the Lord! Now is the time for you to shine, for God’s glory! There is no time for backing down, backing up, or backing away! Now is the time for you to be the city on the hill. Now is the time for you to share your greatness. Now is the time for you to embrace ALL that God has said about you and use everything He’s put in you! He gets no glory in your low esteem, playing small, hiding greatness or false humility. Jesus boldly used His gifts and made impact BEFORE the cross. Now, it’s your turn.

Just like Dororthy, you have an amazing gift. When she used her gift, her life changed. Three clicks and she was home. It’s time for you to click your heels. No more excuses. Let’s operate in authority and power all of 2025!

Your purpose pusher,

Rebecca Jones

Great blog, I agree, a lot of time God has given us just what we need and we don't even realize it. As you stated we must, Evaluate the Inventory (gifts). In addition to using our God-given talents in our jobs, we need to use the things we do well to bless those around us.

Queen your words resonate with me, and I couldn’t agree more. Wicked and The Wizard of Oz both offer us more than just entertainment—they hold profound lessons about identity, power, and purpose. Elphaba’s line, “I don’t cause commotion, I am commotion,” is a declaration of unapologetic confidence in who she is—something every Queen could embody more often. It’s a moment that reminds us to stop downplaying the greatness God has already placed within us. Elphaba’s journey mirrors the internal struggle so many Queens face when we allow the world’s narratives to overshadow the truth of our God-given power.

Dorothy’s story hits equally hard. How many of us, as Queens, are walking around, gifted and equipped, yet unaware of the tools…

Awesome read. I'm one that has gifts without measure. But i often try or used to hide because i felt that i had not been adequately trained on how to use them. It was just easier to hide behind music. I had been trained in that my entire life. After learning that it was a talent, i began to seek God about what my gifts were because i was always taught that singing was a gift. But it is a talent. It's a skill that you can learn. When God anoints your voice, it is then used as a gift. But after seeking God and once, he revealed them to me. I didn't want them because i knew the attacks…
